How to Tell if Your Lawn Is Being Overwatered

When it comes to lawn care, most homeowners worry about underwatering during dry stretches, but overwatering is just as harmful, if not more so. While water is essential for grass growth, too much of it can damage your lawn’s health, attract pests, and waste resources.

At Rooted Lawn & Landscape, we’ve seen firsthand how overwatering affects lawns across Carmel. Here’s how to tell if your lawn is getting too much water and what to do about it.

1. Soft or Waterlogged Grass

If your lawn feels squishy or waterlogged hours after watering or rain, it’s a clear sign of overwatering. Healthy soil should absorb water and drain efficiently; puddles or soft spots point to oversaturation.

2. Fungal Growth or Mushrooms

Too much moisture creates the perfect environment for fungal diseases and mushrooms. If you’re noticing:

  • Circular brown patches (fungus)

  • Clusters of mushrooms
…then your lawn is probably staying too wet for too long.

3. Yellowing Grass Instead of Green

It might seem like more water = greener grass, but the opposite is often true. Overwatered lawns tend to turn yellow or pale green because the roots are suffocating due to a lack of oxygen.

4. Weeds and Thatch Buildup

Overwatering encourages shallow root growth, making it easier for weeds like crabgrass to take hold. It also contributes to thick thatch layers, a buildup of dead grass between the soil and healthy grass, leading to even more problems.

5. Increased Insect Activity

Moist conditions attract lawn pests, such as grubs and mosquitoes. If you’re noticing more bugs in your yard than usual, it could be tied to excessive watering.

What’s the Right Amount of Water?

In Carmel, most lawns only need 1 to 1.5 inches of water per week, including rainfall. It’s better to water deeply once or twice a week rather than shallowly every day. A good rule of thumb is:

  • Water early in the morning

  • Avoid watering in the evening to prevent overnight fungus

  • Use a rain gauge or a tuna can to monitor how much water your lawn is getting
