What Is the Best Time to Water Plants in Hot Summer?

Keeping your plants healthy during the hot summer months can be a challenge especially when temperatures soar and rainfall is scarce. One of the most common questions we hear from homeowners is: “When is the best time to water plants in the summer?” The answer can make a big difference in how well your landscape survives and thrives through the heat.

At Rooted Lawn & Landscape, we’re here to help you protect your investment and keep your plants looking their best. Here’s what you need to know about summer watering.

Early Morning Is Best

The best time to water plants in the hot summer is early in the morning, typically between 5 AM and 9 AM. At this time of day, temperatures are cooler, and the sun is lower in the sky.

Why Morning Watering Works:

  • Reduces evaporation, so more water reaches the roots

  • Allows plants to absorb moisture before the heat kicks in

  • Gives leaves time to dry, reducing the risk of disease

Watering in the morning sets your plants up for a successful day even on the hottest ones.

Avoid Midday Watering

It might seem logical to water when it’s hottest, but midday watering is actually the least effective. High temperatures and strong sunlight cause water to evaporate quickly, meaning much of it won’t reach the roots where it’s needed most.

What Happens When You Water Midday:

  • Quick evaporation wastes water

  • Risk of sunburn on wet leaves

  • Stressed plants may not absorb water efficiently

Unless it’s an emergency, it’s best to wait until the next early morning to water.

Evening Watering: Okay, but Not Ideal

If you miss the morning window, early evening watering (around 6 PM to 7:30 PM) is a second best option. It avoids the heat of the day, but it comes with a caution.

Risks of Evening Watering:

  • Wet foliage overnight can lead to fungal diseases

  • Cooler temperatures slow evaporation, but not plant absorption

If you choose to water in the evening, water the soil at the base of the plant rather than overhead to keep the leaves dry.

Water Deeply and Infrequently

No matter the time of day, how you water is just as important as when. Shallow watering leads to shallow roots, making your plants more vulnerable to heat stress.

Best Practices:

  • Water deeply so moisture reaches 6–8 inches below the surface

  • Water 2–3 times per week depending on weather conditions

  • Use mulch to help retain soil moisture and reduce evaporation

A slow, deep soak at the right time will always benefit your plants more than a light daily sprinkle.
